Johnny Carson Here's Johnny Magic Moments From The Tonight Show CDs Vinyl => Comedy Spoken Word => Interviews Great as expected, the Pearl Bailey song alone is worth the price of admissionAlbums were to fat scratch to play normal.I paid cheap and I got the cheap. It is very important to read everything through before ordering.Album was mint! Packaged very good.HERE'S JOHNNY is a 1974 CASABLANCA Records 2-LP set which includes a 33×22 yellow-backgrounded poster that has a sequence of Johnny on three portable TVs (green, blue and red tinted) doing his trademark invisible golf club swing. A 27 paragraph essay called "The History of the Tonight Show" is printed at bottom in six short columns. All is neatly contained in a single cover (this is NOT a gatefold album), as the 25th anniversary celebration of a late night variety program that had gone through several title, personnel and format changes and one network switch over the years. The Tonight Show began life 5/22/50 on NYC's WABC-TV (7) as Broadway Open House. The original host was Pat Harrington. A switch to WNBT-TV (4) was next with Jerry Lester, then Morey Amsterdam emceeing. When the program went national, a dumb blonde named Dagmar plus celebrity guests and slapstick vaudeville were its forté. BOH's run ended 8/24/51.In late July '53, Steve Allen revived the late-night format on New York's local NBC channel (4 again) under the name "Tonight." On 9/27/54, the Tonight Show had its national debut. With the exception of a six-month respite in 1962 and annual summer reruns, it hasn't been off the air since. Steve and a gaggle of goofy geese (who all went on to greater fame) were backed by Skitch Henderson's music. Allen left in late January '57 and Jack Lescoulie took over with "Tonight! America After Dark." Lescoulie struggled for an audience and was replaced by NY deejay Al 'Jazzbow' Collins, who also flopped. Jack Paar came along to save the day on 7/29/57."Tonight--Starring Jack Paar" was a phenomenal success. He created the "family of guests" concept; his Tonight Show was the first to be broadcast in color. The emotionally volatile Paar quit abruptly in Feb. '60, but returned soon after. He left for good on 3/29/62. After a half-year off the air, "Tonight" returned to NBC with a new host and crew.At 11:30 PM EDT on Oct. 1st, '62, Groucho Marx introduced Johnny Carson. Ed McMahon replaced Jack Paar's sidekick Hugh Downs, Doc Severinson took José Melis's baton. Guests on that historic premiere broadcast: Joan Crawford, Rudy Vallee, Tony Bennett and Mel Brooks. The 26 tracks on HERE'S JOHNNY represent highlights of Carson's first dozen years. Featured are stand up comics, singers, actors, a President and a "faithful Indian companion."FOR A COMPLETE PROGRAM LIST,SEE COMMENT #1, LOCATED BELOWThis two-record set is still fairly easy to find, and if you're interested in the period in which comedy was a large category of the LP market (before home video or cable) then this one's a must. I don't know of any CD or MP3 transfers. There are so many big names featured, though, that this set would alone justify setting up a turntable."Here's Johnny" gets a bad rap due to the record company (Casablanca Records) committing its usual blunder of shipping too many copies relative to demand. Like the later fiasco with the four Kiss solo albums shipping a million copies each and winding up in the cut-out discount bins, the Carson Show album overruns couldn't sell during its contractually allotted time and had to be sold at a reduced price or returned to the distributor. Later sales were probably slow due to video hurting the popularity of the comedy album as a form, so lots of the LP sets are still around.Grab this one when you can. Buddy Hackett, Dean Martin, Don Rickles, Lenny Bruce, Jack Benny and many others are captured doing routines that can't be topped, and in several cases were only performed on this show.
